Borrower Responsibilities

Your Basic Responsibilities as a Borrower

1. Understand that this is a loan and must be repaid – even if you do not complete your education or get the job you had expected

2. While in school, you must choose whether to defer payments until after graduation. (Note: Interest will continue to accrue during this time)

3. Notify the lender right away if you change your name, address, phone number, employer or Social Security Number.

Once you graduate
  • You must decide which repayment option is right for you (graduated or regular repayment).
  • You may also have an opportunity to consolidate some of your loans. Evaluate your options and choose a consolidation plan carefully.
  • Make your payments on time. If you have extenuating circumstances, such as military mobilization, contact your lender right away to understand your deferment or "forbearance" options.
  • If you are granted a forbearance or deferment after graduation, remember this is temporary and you will need to begin making regular payments again when the forbearance period ends.

For Credit Union Student Choice Loans, if you elect the auto-repayment option and make payments on time for 48 consecutive months, you may request to have your co-borrower (if applicable) released of further obligations, subject to the credit union’s approval.
